Learning to swim is an essential life skill, especially living in a beautiful coastal town like Exmouth! The ability to swim out of danger, or indeed help others, can be a life-saver, and having fun at your local LED pool is great for health, social skills, confidence and much more.
Our 'Learn to Swim' (LTS) programme takes a non-swimmer from blowing their first bubbles, all the way to developing confidence and competence in the water across the 4 strokes, following Swim England's 'Learn to Swim' pathway. This includes Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke and Front crawl. We teach Stages 1-7 of Swim England’s National Teaching Plan (NTP) in classes of between 6-12 children, depending on the stage, ability and presence of assistance in the water.
As learners progress through the stages and are awarded their certificates and badges, they will also learn the skills to take part in lots of different water-based sports throughout their lives. Many of our swimmers go on to join the ‘Competitive and Development section’ to further their skills in a swimming club environment, and, potentially enter local galas and competitions. Learning to swim also opens up other opportunities which include lifeguarding, playing water polo, accessing open water swimming, and, of course you can then take advantage of all the outdoor water sports offered here in Exmouth like paddle boarding, kayaking, windsurfing, sailing and more!
Our LTS Programme runs on Saturdays and currently operates in 3 slots of 30 minutes. The first at 5.00- 5.30pm, the second 5.45-6.15pm and third 6.30-7.00pm. We operate 46 weeks of the year. Our team of helpers, teachers, parents and of course swimmers, take a well-deserved break throughout August and have 2-weeks off for Christmas and New Year. Saturdays that also fall on days such as the Queen’s Birthday, Guy Fawkes and in half term, will be reviewed as to whether they go ahead with the anticipation of poor attendance.
Please talk to us if you need any support with additional needs.

Why swim with Exmouth Swimming?
Our LTS programme is divided into ability stages that has been designed to cover the core elements of fundamental movement skills and swimming stroke development in line with Sport England's movement literacy guidelines. There is no maximum amount of time any swimmer can spend in each stage, so they can progress when they are ready. We run a continual assessment of learners to monitor their progress. We believe in rewarding achievement every step of the way and so a certificate and badge are awarded FREE upon successful completion of each stage. We host an annual Learn to Swim Gala and are looking to put on more fun and competitive opportunities in 2022.
Who is the Learn to Swim Chairman?
David Hill is the Society’s elected Chairman for the Learn to Swim section 2021-2022 and also head coach of Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving Society. David was born in Exmouth and joined ES and LSS when he was 8 years old. He enjoyed socialising with his friends, getting fitter, and pushing himself to become a faster swimmer. 4 years later he was successful enough to feed progress into a larger club to advance his swimming career. At 15- years- old David was the 'Youngest British Athlete' to represent Paralympics GB at the Athens 2004 Paralympic Games, where he was a finalist in the 100m Backstroke. David ended his 15 year-long career as a multiple international medallist, British Champion and Top 10 finisher at the Rio de Janeiro Paralympics in 2016. Following retirement from sport, David turned his hand to coaching and mentoring; aiming to inspire a generation to be the best that they can be. On appointment as Head coach David said "I'm proud to have the opportunity to give back to the club and the community where I started. I will always be grateful for the stepping stones that Exmouth provided me in my career, and now I can do the same for others". David is a Level 2 ASA Swim England Swimming Teacher and Coach and Level 3 Personal Trainer.
