Tiverton Junior Gala Meet 28th May 2017

Exmouth attended a Junior fun gala for under 13’s at the Exe Valley Leisure Centre, following an invitation from host club Tiverton Swimming Club. With the home club providing two teams, Exmouth were joined by Exeter City, Honiton and Dawlish. This gala was an opportunity for some of the new members of the squad – Eveie Fitzhenery, Anna Griffin and Ella Foord to make their debut. They were joined in the 9 and unders by Jessie-May Cox and Jessie Cooper.

Exmouth’s first win of the evening came in the mixed 4 x 50 freestyle relay in the Under 13’s age group. The team of Lily Allen, Megan Harris, James Griffin and Luke Crompton finished in 2:16.80. There were also wins in this age group for James Griffin (50m Breaststroke – PB) Lily Allen (50m Backstroke; 50m Freestyle), Grace Gillingham (50m Butterfly) and the mixed medley relay team which featured Lily, Grace, James and Luke.  There were also notable performances from Josh Te Moananui, who achieved a new PB of 41.43 seconds in the 50m backstroke, and Luke Crompton, who set a new PB in the 50m butterfly.

The 11 under age group were represented by Jasmine Pashley, Chloe Fellows, Sophie Raven, Ryan Fitzhenry and Matthew King. Sophie won the 50m breaststroke in a time of 45.07s, and finished second in the freestyle in a tight finish with the swimmers from Exeter and Dawlish. Chloe came second in the 50m butterfly, whilst there was also a placing for the mixed 4 x 50 freestyle relay squad of Chloe, Sophie, Matthew and Ryan.

For the under 9’s this was an opportunity for some of the new swimmers to get their first ever times, some of which were set on the lead leg of the relay events. There were new times for Eveie in both the 50m backstroke and the 50m freestyle; Anna in the 50m freestyle; and Ella also in the 50m freestyle. There was a new PB for Jessie-May Cox in the 50m breaststroke. The girls were joined in the age group by Darcy Murphy from Exeter City, who swam as Exmouth’s representative in the individual boys events. It therefore meant that the girls swam together in the medley relay. The team of Ella, Anna, Eveie and Jessie set a new club record of 4:10.61. Well done girls.

A big thank you to Martin Pashley for stepping up to the role of coach for the evening; Dawn Harris and Vicky Raven for team managing and Neal Fitzhenry for timekeeping duties.  Overall Exmouth finished second with Exeter City winning the gala and Honiton in third place. Well done to the Exmouth contingent, who stayed on poolside until the end to applaud the winners.
