Third Dartmoor Sprint Meet
Six Exmouth Swimmers attended the third annual Dartmoor Sprint meet at Okehampton Leisure Centre. The level 4 licensed meet was jointly hosted by Okehampton Otters and Tavistock Swimming Club. In addition to the hosts and the Exmouth half dozen, there were swimmers from Brixham, Crediton, Oddicombe, Paignton, Plymouth RN, and Tiverton competing. Swimmers swam 50m races plus a 100m IM.
In the morning session events were held for the under 9s, under 11s and under 13s. In the 11U age group were Finlay Roberts and Chloe Fellows. With lots of swimmers in her age group, Chloe swam really well in her 5 races. She set a new PB in the 50m backstroke, beating her previous time by 1.5s, and was just fractionally off her PB time in the 50m breaststroke. Finlay was also setting PBs with three recorded in his five races. The most impressive was taking over 2s off his 100m IM time, to finish in 3rd place. He got his second bronze medal of the meeting in the 50m breaststroke, however went one better in the 50m backstroke with a silver medal. Finlay finished in second place overall, based on placings.
In the boys 13U age group, Finlay’s brother Jules ensured that his younger sibling wasn’t the only one going home with medals. Jules took gold in the 50m freestyle and 50m backstroke, and bronze in both the 50m breaststroke and 50m fly. The 3rd place finishes were more impressive in that both were PBs. In the same age group, but in the girls section was Lily Allen. Lily recorded a time of 38.97s in winning the 50m backstroke, and followed that with silvers in the 100m IM, 50m freestyle and 50m breaststroke. There was further jubilation for both Jules and Lily at the end of the meet, when they were crowned top boy and girl respectively in their age group.
In the afternoon session, Abbie Freeman and Joseph Bollington increased the medal haul. Swimming in the Girls 12U age group, Abbie took home golds in the 50m freestyle, 50m breaststroke and 100m IM. Her 100m IM time was a PB, setting a new mark of 01:24.21. Abbie also got a PB in the 50m fly, finishing in second place, and collected a second silver medal in the 50m backstroke. Joseph was not to be outdone in the medal count, also collecting five, with gold in both the 100m IM and 50m breaststroke. In the 50m freestyle, 50m fly and 50 m backstroke, he finished as runner-up. Both Joseph and Abbie were awarded the top swimmer prize in their age groups.
Overall, a good performance from the Exmouth swimmers, and special thanks to Janine and Vanessa for team managing.
