Fun relay gala at Sidmouth

The club's Competitive and Development section sent a team to Sidmouth Swimming Pool to compete in a relay gala on Sunday 1st July. Swimming in Lane 5, Exmouth saw opposition from hosts Sid Vale, Honiton, Chard and Crediton. The event was a first ever gala for some of the younger Exmouth swimmers, and they can be proud of their efforts. Age groups ranged from 10 and under, up to 16 and under. In addition to medley, freestyle, butterfly and breaststroke relays, there were a few alternative relays which proved to be fun and great to watch. The relay teams were mixed, so giving the boys and girls chance to swim together as a team.

The first event was a crescendo relay, with the first swimmer from the 10 and under age group swimming 25 metres. The swimmer's increased in age and distance each leg. The second swimmer completing 50 metres, third swimmer 100 metres and to finish off Bethany Browning had to complete 8 lengths of the pool. The race was one of the closest of the evening , and Exmouth were unlucky to miss out as all five swimmers finished in similar times. The Exmouth time of 4:45.66 was a new time for the club record books with the event never swam before as a mixed age race. Well done to Louis, Lucy, James and Bethany.

Exmouth soon had a couple of wins in the 14 under and 16 under butterfly relays, before the events switched to a golf ball relay. This fun event saw 8 swimmers each swimming 25 metres, with a golf ball in each hand. Well done to our younger swimmers for not dropping the ball on their relay legs.

In the 10 under mixed medley relay, the team of Daniel, Anna, George and Charlotte broke the club record with a new time of 3:35.50. The medley and breaststroke events relays were separated by a T-Shirt relay. Some of the older Exmouth swimmers had been through this drill in previous training sessions. The quickest way to swap T-shirt from one swimmer to another is by linking holding hands, facing each other, and looping the t-shirt from one person to the other. Passing on their tips, the Exmouth team fancied their chances, however were then told that the T-Shirt had to be the right way round and not inside out, when swimming. This required a last minute change in tactics from the team, and they finished a respectable third in that event.

The gala finished with frees a Cannon relay, and once the points had been totalled up, Exmouth finished third overall, with hosts Sid Vale finishing on top. Well done to all the swimmers, and in particular the 10 and under age group who were there in mass, so of whom were swimming their first gala. our 10 and under age group swimmers were Ella, William S, William F, Jessie, Tate, Daniel, Evie, Dominic, Lexi, Laila, Ben, Anna, Charlotte, Louis and George.

Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving Society would like to thank Sid Vale for the invite to their gala.
