Devon County Championships 2016
The start of the year saw the county championships competed over several weekends held at the Plymouth Life Centre writes Tracy Simpson. Three brave souls from Exmouth Swimming & Life Saving Society qualified to compete in this event, with Jasmine Simpson-Currie in the girls 15u 100m butterfly, her brother Scott Simpson-Currie in the 13u 50m & 100m breaststroke and first to swim was Jon Dobel in the 13u 100m backstroke. All three were competing at this level for the first time and all came away with some fantastic results.
Jon swam a new pb time with a regional qualifying time and was so close to making the age group final and ended up in 9th place and first reserve for the final. Later that day it was the turn of Scott in the 50m breaststroke and he achieved a regional consideration time and again was so close to making the age group final missing out by the narrowest of margins to finish in 11th. A fantastic achievement for both swimmers in their first county championships.
The following weekend Scott was joined by Jasmine and making her championship debut Jasmine swam a fantastic 100m butterfly heat to record a new pb over 4 seconds quicker than her entry time and by the smallest of margins missing the final and ending up as first reserve.
Scott was then back in the pool to complete the championships with his 100m breaststroke finishing with almost the same time as his entry time for a 12th place finish.
It has been a good few months for the two boys with Jon becoming the club age group champion with Scott in 2nd place recently at the club champs and for Scott over this last weekend completing the full set of club age group records for the breaststroke in the 50m, 100, and 200m; some of which have stood for nearly 20 years.
