Devon County ASA Sprint Gala
5th March 2017
A dozen Junior Exmouth Swimmers descended upon the Plymouth Life Centre, for the annual Devon County Sprint gala. The meet involved swimmers competing in all 4 strokes over 50 metres, and the Exmouth contingent came away with some good results.
The first event of the day was the girls 50m butterfly. Sophie Raven swam a personal best time of 46.13s in the 12YO age group, whilst in the 13YO, Grace Gillingham produced an outstanding swim setting a new club record. Recording a time of 35.31s, Grace won the event, over two seconds ahead of the next placed swimmer. Age groups for the Sprints are based on your age on 31st December, and as Grace is still only 12, her time broke the club’s age 12 50m fly record, which had stood since 1990!
In the boys 50m breaststroke, there were PBs for Josh Smith, Jules Roberts, Ryan Voysey and Joseph Bollington. Joseph’s time of 38.62s also gave him a bronze medal position. This was the first of what turned out to be a total of three medals for Joseph as he also received bronze medals for both the backstroke and freestyle later in the day.
In the girls 50m backstroke Sophie Spiller swam a time of 36.05s, and as a result gained the silver medal, whilst Lily Allen was unlucky to miss out on the medals finishing 4th place in the 14YO age group. There was some comfort for Lily, in that her time of 37.73s was a new PB. The backstroke also saw the first of a hat-trick of PBs from the meet for Megan Harris. In terms of PBs, Megan was Exmouth’s most successful female swimmer as she followed up her new backstroke benchmark, with new times in both the freestyle and breaststroke. Sophie Raven followed up her fly PB, with a backstroke PB. In the boys fly there were second PBs of the meet for both Jules Roberts and Josh Smith.
The second session of the meet, began with the girls 50m freestyle, and saw Sophie Spiller taking the second silver medal in a time of 30.27s. In the boys backstroke, in addition to Joseph Bollington’s 3rd place, Josh smith continued his good form with a new PB. In the final event of the day for the girls, Heidi Schunck produce a really good swim in the breaststroke and just missed out on a new PB, by 0.45 of a second. Sophie Raven also swam well in finishing in 5th place out of a total of 47 girls in her age group. The final event of the day was the fast and furious boys 50m freestyle, which saw PBs for the clubs two youngest swimmers at the meet, Ryan Fitzhenry and Finlay Roberts. Finlay set a new time of 38.63s, and Ryan took nearly two seconds off his previous time with a swim of 40.46s. Jules Roberts completed a hat-trick of PBs, finishing with a bronze medal, whilst Josh Smith ensured that he made it 4 out of 4 PBs by setting a new mark in the same event.
