Our Development swimmers are regularly invited to participate in various local team and individual galas and our own Club championships held in October each year.
Beginning with one 45 minute session per week, our swimmers have the option to join one of the following sessions:
- Mondays 6:00pm to 6:45pm
- Wednesdays 6:00pm to 6:45pm
- Saturdays 6:15pm to 7:00pm
Swimmers will then have the opportunity to join a second weekly session should they wish to work towards the transition into our Club squad.
Depending on ability, a typical swim training session will consist of:
- A continuous, steady warm up, covering between 150m - 350m
- A range of swim drills to work on technique of a particular stroke, including starts; turns; and finishes
- Swimming continuously (with short breaks) for 500m - 750m distance across a range of strokes to work on swim fitness
- Swimming some shorter distances at a faster pace, with longer rests to develop swim speed and racing technique
By the end of a swimmer's time in Development Squad, we aim for the following outcomes:
- Demonstrate good swimming pool lane etiquette - eg. leaving at least 5 seconds between swimmers; not hanging on lane ropes; and actively listening to coaching guidance
- Swim 200m individual medley (2 lengths each of butterfly; backstroke; breaststroke; front crawl, using legal turns and underwater work)
- Complete a set of 600m (eg. 12 x 50m; 6 x 100m; 3 x 200m) on a specific turnaround time, with a focus on stroke technique and consistency
- Swim 200m kick set, with correct use of kickboard or streamline position, using a mix of strokes
- Perform a 10 metre underwater kick on front and back from a push and glide in a streamlined position
- Correct starts; turns and finishes across all four strokes
- Understand how to "set" the starting blocks and perform a racing dive from them
