DEVELOPMENT SQUAD
Our Development squad offers those swimmers that have completed Stage 6 of the Swim England Learn to Swim programme the opportunity to further develop their swimming and aims to prepare them to seamlessly progress into either our Junior or Youth squad in the future, should they wish to do so.
In addition to continuing to work on swim technique in all four strokes, our classes also look to gradually increase the distances that they are swimming in each session, and introduce correct starts, turns & finishes.
These 45 minute classes are at 6:15pm on Saturday evenings and in addition to swimming once a week, swimmers will be invited to participate in our Club galas and the Devon mini-league should they wish to do so.
New swimmers will join the squad in Lane 1 and progress through the lanes until they reach lane 6, at which point they will be offered the opportunity to join either our Junior or Youth squad.
Swimmers new to Exmouth Swimming Club will be offered a trial lesson with us, which will then allow us to assign them to a lane, based on their ability to achieve the outcomes listed below.

DEVELOPMENT SQUAD LANE OUTCOMES
LANES 1 & 2:
- Complete steady warm up swim, using variety of swim strokes (covering 6-8 lengths)
- Jump from diving blocks (toes over edge of the block) into the pool, feet first, looking ahead and using arms to propel themselves forwards
- Perform a racing dive from poolside (as opposed to a standing dive), demonstrating good streamline position (with hands above head)
- Push and glide in a streamline position (both hands above head) and swim 100 metres backstroke without a break (using correct hand entry and recovery position, continuous leg kick, with head looking upwards to ceiling)
- Push and glide in a streamline position (both hands above head) and swim 100 metres front crawl without a break, with good body position, using a continuous leg kick and breathing to both sides where appropriate (without looking forwards)
- Push and glide in a streamline position (both hands above head) and swim 100 metres breaststroke without a break. Swimmer must be able to demonstrate a leg kick that is simultaneous and on the same horizontal plane using a “whip” kick and demonstrate arm pulls that do not pull beyond the hip line
- Push and glide in a streamline position (both hands above head) and swim 25 metres butterfly, using fly kick (with both legs together ie. not using breaststroke kick)
- Swim 100 kick set (without a break), with correct use of kickboard, using a mix of strokes
- Perform forward somersault close to wall, planting feet onto wall and push and glide from wall in streamline (on front or back)
- Understand reasons for the flags & know how many back stoke arm strokes are between flags and finish wall
- Demonstrate good swimming pool lane etiquette – e.g: leaving at least 5 seconds between swimmers, not hanging on lane ropes, and demonstrate good listening skills
In addition to skills from earlier lanes …
- Complete steady warm up swim, using variety of swim strokes, covering 8 – 10 lengths)
- Perform a racing dive from poolside – maintaining streamline position (with hands above head) under water for at least 5 metres from wall, introducing butterfly kicks before breaking into front crawl
- Perform a backstroke start from poolside, maintaining streamline position (both hands above head) underwater and introducing butterfly kicks before breaking into backstroke
- Perform a breaststroke start from wall, beginning in streamline (both hands above head), followed by: one underwater pull (past hips), one butterfly kick and one leg kick, breaking into breaststroke at the start of the second arm pull
- Push and glide and swim 150 metres front crawl (without a break)
- Push and glide and swim 150 metres backstroke (without a break)
- Push and glide and swim 150 metres breaststroke (without a break)
- Push and glide a swim 50m butterfly (with a short break after first 25m)
- Swim 100m individual medley (1 length of each butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl), using “legal turns” (ie. finishing butterfly and breaststroke lengths with two hands, finishing backstroke length on back)
- Swim 150 kick set, with correct use of kickboard, using a mix of strokes
- Perform a front crawl (tumble) turn from 10 metres in to 15 metres out, leaving the wall in a streamline position (both hands above head)
- Understand reasons for the flags & know how many back stoke arm strokes are between flags and finish wall – demonstrating ability to finish length of backstroke on back
In addition to skills from earlier lanes....
- Complete steady warm up swim, using variety of swim strokes, covering minimum of 10 lengths)
- Understand how to “set” starting block and use poolside clock
- Perform a racing dive from starting blocks (using a track start), maintaining streamline position (both hands above head) under water and introducing a minimum of three butterfly kicks before breaking into front crawl
- Perform a backstroke start from starting blocks, maintaining streamline position (both hands above head) underwater and introducing a minimum or three butterfly kicks before breaking into backstroke
- Push and glide and swim 200 metres front crawl (without a break)
- Push and glide and swim 200 metres backstroke (without a break)
- Push and glide and swim 200 metres breaststroke (without a break)
- Push and glide a swim 50m butterfly (without a break)
- Swim 200m individual medley (2 lengths of each butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and front crawl), using “legal turns” and finishes as described in Lanes 3 & 4
- Complete a set lasting 600 metres (either 12 x 50 metres, 6 x 100 metres, 3 x 200 metres) on a specific turnaround time agreed by the teacher or coach (e.g. 1:30 minutes for 50 metres) with a focus on stroke technique and consistency
- Swim 200m kick set, with correct use of kickboard or streamline position, using a mix of strokes
- Perform a backstroke turn from 10 meters in to 15 metres, using streamline position (heads above head) with underwater butterfly kicks on leaving wall , transferring into backstroke
- Perform a breaststroke turn from 10 metres in to 15 metres out
- Perform a butterfly turn from 10 metres in to 15 metres out
- Perform a 10 metre underwater kick on front and back from a push and glide in a streamlined position
