Exmouth Swimmers Conquer Lake.
Intrepid swimmers from Exmouth Swimming and Lifesaving Society travelled to the Lake district on the 7th July 2007 to compete in a relay swim up and down the length of Lake Windermere.
The 21 mile team event was organised to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of the British Long Distance Swimming Association to which ESLSS is affiliated. Teams travelled from far afield, including two from Ireland, in order to tackle the gruelling team event which saw six members completing two two-mile stints each over the course of the day.
Exmouth had high hopes. The team included four Fairway Buoy finishers, one past and one prospective channel swimmer, and two solo 2-way Windermere conquerors.
Elaine Lewis, Gemma Franks, Mark Westaway, Adam Tapp, Ian Lang, and Olly White were the swimmers guided up the lake by team manager Alan Franks who kept a watchful eye on the route.

between Exmouth and a team of Junior Elite swimmers from the Wigan Best Club. When the weather took a turn for the worse Exmouth began to challenge as their open water experience paid off. But, in the end the raw speed of the Wigan squad was too strong and Exmouth finished in a very credible second place in a time of 9hours 36minutes 57seconds; over an hour and a half in front of the third place team from Warrington.
The 6 Swimmers and Rower Kev Brown were presented with their certificates after the annual Starcross swim which took place on Friday 13th of June. |
