British Record for Masters Swimmers
Masters swimmers from Exmouth Swimming & Life Saving Society returned home triumphant from the National Championships in Sheffield. The team bagged 4 gold medals, 3 silver and 6 bronze over the 3 day event held at the Ponds Forge International Swimming Pool.
The strength and depth of Masters swimming in Exmouth came into focus in the relay events. The ladies 72 yrs freestyle team of Kayleigh Vine, Libby Kathro, Elaine Lewis and Tara Dudley finished 3 seconds clear of the field in a time of 1:53.23. Later the girls were delighted to learn that they had set a new British Age Group record in the process.
Exmouth entered 2 teams into the mixed medley events and although ranked 4th and 7th at the start, they took the silver and bronze medals in a gutsy performance. A tight finish saw Gemma Franks and Tara Dudley bring the teams home ahead of GB Police, Bournemouth and Birmingham Masters.
In the Individual events it was Bill Letch who set the standard. Competing in the 65-69 yrs age group, Bill managed 3 gold medals, 2 silver and a bronze in a hectic weekend of competition including grueling events like the 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle.
Adam Tapp underlined his credentials as a distance freestyler by taking a bronze medal in the 800m. Swimming in the very competitive 19-24 age group, Tapp smashed the club record touching in a time of 9:28.10.
Kayleigh Vine marked her return to swimming with a remarkable swim in the 100m Individual Medley. Vine used her power in the breastroke to gain on her competitors and finished 3rd behind Andrea Alleyne of Swindon and GB swimmer Cassie Pattern.
Numerous club records were broken over the course of the weekend. Richard Lander lowered the blue ribbon event 100m freestyle record to 55.03 seconds and David Franks set new best times in the 200m and 400m medley events and the 400m freestyle, lowering the mark to 4:25.02.
18 swimmers competed for Exmouth over the course of the weekend, one of the biggest squads at the competition. Over 40 personal best times were set by the Exmouth swimmers who owe a lot to the dedication and knowledge of Masters coach Bob Clarke.
This year the squad looked the part in brand new team tops which were kindly sponsored by Whites Pharmacy of Exmouth.
