Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving Society swimmer Mark Westaway attended Dover town hall this week for the Channel Swimming Association’s annual awards and presentation ceremony.
Westaway completed the marathon swim on 8th August this year in a time of 12 hours and 51 minutes in stormy conditions; he was the only swimmer for over a week to beat bad weather conditions and complete the swim from Dover to the French coast. Mark, who attended the ceremony to be presented with his certificate, was surprised to be presented with a trophy as the fastest British Long Distance Swimming Association swimmer in 2008. Westaway who faced tough conditions off the French coast was pushed back away from the shore before swimming along the coast to find a safe landing point but was still 3rd fastest British male and 10th fastest international swimmer in 2008. This summer was a poor one for channel swimming with very few swimmers managing to complete the crossing due to adverse weather throughout the season; Mark was one of only 29 people who completed the swim with the CSA this year, making his achievement all the more impressive.
