Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving Society’s Masters Squad attended the Royal Navy Masters meet on Sunday 28th March at Millfield School in Somerset.  The meet was the first for the squad since the ban on controversial bodysuits but did not affect the overall performance of the team who won the competition for best visiting team; beating the Royal Navy who as hosts had never been beaten at this event before.  The squad included 13 swimmers and their coach Bob Clarke.  The swimmers at the event were Yvonne Carpenter-Warren, Lyn Curtis, Tara Dudley, Louise Kathro, Neville King, Bill Letch, Sam Lander, Ian Lang, Andy Pratt, Alan Swann, Adam Tapp, David Thompson, and Olly White.  Carpenter-Warren, Curtis, Swann, and Thompson swimming for Exmouth Masters for the time.

 

Bill Letch swam to a new British Record in the 70-74 50m Freestyle in a time of 30.00.  Bill also swam to a number of meet records and took his age group title.  Olly White won the men’s 30-34 age group title, Ian Lang the senior 18-24 age group title and Tara Dudley the women’s senior age group title by swimming more than 8 individual events each.  Louise Kathro swam to a meet record in the 50-54 50m freestyle in a time of 34.33.  Bill and Louise were involved in another meet record along with Lyn Curtis, and Andy Pratt in the 200+ mixed freestyle relay event.  Neville King swam a strong meet particularly in the middle distance freestyle events where he won gold in the 200m freestyle and silver in the 400 metres in what was a very competitive age group. Sam Lander performed well in the Backstroke and 100 metre events swimming to gold in the 100m backstroke in the senior age group and silvers in the 50 back, 100 IM and blue riband 100 freestyle events.  Adam Tapp swam to gold in the 200 freestyle and silver in the 100 butterfly whilst David Thompson dominated the sprint events in the same 25-29 age group with gold in the 50 fly and silver in the popular 100 freestyle event.  Alan Swann swimming for Exmouth for the first time coming 4th in both the 100m IM and the 50m butterfly and also swam in the men’s 160+ freestyle and medley relays where they came fourth and first respectively.  Carpenter Warren also making her Exmouth debut medalled in the 50m Freestyle and Breaststroke (bronze) and in the 100 Breaststroke with silver.

 

Exmouth also had relay teams in the men’s 72+, 120+, and 160+ freestyle and medley relays and a 200+ mixed team in the freestyle and medley the relays were very successful with a number of medals as well as the meet record in the 200+ mixed freestyle relay.  A number of the swimmers showed real commitment to the team swimming back to back relays, leaving the water in one relay and re-entering the water immediately in the next to pick up as many points as possible for the team.
