On Sunday 20th July five Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving Society open water swimmers and their support team travelled to the Lake District to take part in the British Long Distance Swimming Association’s Coniston Championships.
The five swimmers all raced the length of the five and a quarter mile lake accompanied by their crews in an assortment of rowing boats and Kayaks. The Exmouth Squad, the largest team at the event, put in a strong performance with all five swimmers finishing in the top 12 in a field of nearly 50 swimmers from around the UK.
Tara Dudley led the Exmouth swimmers home after a battle with the leaders to take 6th place overall and claiming a bronze medal with 3rd place in the women’s championship. Ian Lang followed a few minutes behind to claim 7th place and 4th male in a time of 2 hours 23minutes 39seconds. Ross Szender was the next swimmer to finish claiming 5th male position and 8th place overall. Adam Tapp was involved in a sprint finish finishing as 6th male and 10th position. Elaine Lewis swimming her first lake finished the course as 5th female and 12th overall.
All five swimmers would like to thank their support crew who are responsible for navigating the swimmer’s route, escorting the swimmers for safety, transporting the swimmers, their kayaks, and equipment around the lake and making sure the swimmer’s clothes get to the finish. Without the support team the swimmers would not have been able to put in such strong performances individually or as a team. |
