This year’s annual Starcross swim was held on Friday 13th of July, and with the day came some bad luck with the weather! With heavy rain throughout the swim, the support crews, canoeists and spectators who watched the 18 swimmers finish their swim got as wet as the swimmers themselves.
Despite the weather a strong field of swimmers started the race, which for a few was their first open water contest; well done to the four competitive swimmers who were competing in their first open water competition.
The swim started with the turn of the tide so that swimmers are tidally assisted with the 1.75 mile swim. Swimming from Starcross to Exmouth docks was relatively flat and good conditions. However past the docks swimmers experienced much rougher conditions and a lot of seaweed!
The race was won by new Exmouth swimmer Caroline Ball, who also swims for Kelly College. Second home and first male swimmer was David Franks. Adam Tapp was third, Tara Dudley fourth and Mark Westaway and Ian Lang provided an exciting finish with Westaway beating Lang by only 6 seconds to claim 5th place and 3rd male.
Well done to all swimmers, and thank you to all the organisers and safety crew. |
