The 47th Fairway swim, organised by Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving Society, was held on Sunday 13th June.  The swim started east of Mamhead Slipway at 13.00 and was a very successful one, particularly for the Exmouth team.

The Exmouth contingent included eight swimmers; including two English Channel swimmers and a number of future Channel swimmers.  Cameron Carpenter-Warren a Kelly College and Exmouth swimmer and James Shattock who trains at Budleigh with the Exmouth squad made up the team.

Olly White who has been the first Exmouth swimmer for the last ten years continued his record and took the overall title; the first time an Exmouth swimmer has won the race since the inaugural race in 1963.  Tara Dudley finishing 7th overall and also took the ladies title for Exmouth whilst Mark Westaway won the Breaststroke race to complete a full sweep of the trophies for Exmouth.  Cameron Carpenter-Warren, Jamie Page, Ian Lang, and Stu Baker were 2nd, 4th, 5th and 6th respectively whilst Gemma Franks was 3rd in the women’s championship to cap a hugely successful swim for the Exmouth team in an event that attracts some of the best open water long distance swimmers from around the country, including King of the Channel Michael Reed.

Conditions for the swim were challenging with an easterly wind creating large waves out to sea but conditions were sufficient to enable the new full 4.5 mile course to be swum for the second time after a shorter alternative course had to be used last year.

Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving Society would like to thank everyone involved with the swim for making it such a success, all proceeds raised by the swim will go to the Help for Heroes charity.  The swimmers would also like to thank Fairway organiser Barry Westaway and trainer Alan Franks for all their work and input which has resulted in such a successful result.

The team’s next event is an 8 mile swim across Torbay and back in July.
