Exmouth Swimming and Life Saving Society’s Masters Squad travelled to Cardiff at the weekend to take part in the Cardiff Masters Welsh Capital Masters Open Meet.

Exmouth took a small but strong squad to Cardiff.  Caroline Ball, Neville King, Ian Lang, Bill Letch, Mark Westaway, and Olly White were the swimmers who made the journey.  The meet was swum over an Olympic sized 50 metre 10 lane pool and was, for several Exmouth swimmers, their first long course competition.

Caroline competed in every individual event except the 400 freestyle; she medalled in every race and won the title for the best overall female of the meet.  Neville King had an impressive meet achieving a number of best times and medalling five times.  He set the standard in his first event, breaking his 200 metre freestyle record halfway into the 400 freestyle where he also set a personal best time.  Ian Lang had a good meet, particularly in the middle distance freestyle and the Breaststroke events, winning gold in the 200 Freestyle, Silver in the 400 and bronze in the 100 breaststroke. Bill Letch had, as ever, a strong meet competing for his last year in the 65-69 age group, medalling in every event and winning the 4x50 individual medley.  Mark Westaway put in a good performance in a strong age group where he did well to medal in a couple of events.  Olly White, competing in a strong age group, swam in the popular 50 metre sprint events.  These events attract a larger number of competitors than some of the other events so Olly did well to claim 2 silvers in the 50 fly and backstroke, and 2 bronze in the 50 freestyle and breaststroke in what was already a difficult age group.
